Muhsin Hendricks, the world’s first openly gay imam, was shot and killed by gunmen in South Africa.
The shooting took place on Saturday, February 16, in the Bethesldorp area of Keberha, Eastern Cape.
Police confirmed that Hendricks died at the scene of the attack.
Hendricks was known for leading a mosque that served as a safe space for the LGBTQ+ community and other marginalized Muslims.
At the time of the attack, he was in his car when another vehicle blocked his path.
Two gunmen, with their faces covered, stepped out and opened fire on him.
After the attack, the assailants quickly fled the scene.
The driver of Hendricks` car later realized that he had been fatally shot while sitting in the back seat.
A video of the incident surfaced, confirming that it was a targeted killing, though the motive remains unclear.
The Eastern Cape police have appealed to the public for any information that could help in their investigation into this shocking crime.
